Cardiff Hospital - RMHC

The Joyner group were chosen to provide an integrated package of thermal insulation and external render for use on a major new £5.5 million facility recently constructed at a leading Welsh hospital by Willmott Dixon Construction of Cardiff .

The Sto products were used to achieve the required thermal performance and 0.2 W/m2K U-value for the new Ronald McDonald House, at the 1,000-bed University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
“The Ronald McDonald House provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families who have children being treated at the hospital, so comfort was an important factor in its design and construction,” explains Alex Southall of AEW Architects.

“There were a number of reasons behind our specification of the Sto products, not least of which was the fact that Sto are the market leader in this area. Ronald McDonald House Charities typically operates this type of building on a very long-term basis, and so we needed a high-quality insulation solution which would provide the required level of Insulation performance, and also prove to be durable and long lasting.

The BBA-certified Sto Therm Classic K system combines EPS insulation board and entirely cement-free rendering com-ponents. This offers a market-leading impact resistance of 60 joules, which is up to 10 times greater than a similar ce-mentitious system. It was applied to the Ronald McDonald House using Sto-Turbofix, a single-component adhesive foam that allowed for fast and easy installation. It was finished with Sto Armat Classic cement-free reinforcing render, and a top coat of Sto Lotusan; which provides unbeatable water and dirt repellence. It forms a unique surface texture that causes the rainwater to run off the render quickly and easily. The Joyner Group have used Sto products on a number of previous projects, so knew they would perform on this new building,” “The actual installation process was relatively fast and straightforward, exactly as we expected, and the finished result looks excellent.”
