Aztec West, Bristol

Joyner Group were appointed by TFT Consultants in October 2020 to undertake the cladding remediation works at an office building in Aztec West, Bristol.

The office block had a combustible external wall insulation system installed which was making it extremely difficult to get building insurance since the Grenfell tragedy. This was to be stripped off and replaced with a non-combustible system.

As with all cladding remediation projects, the full scope of works cannot be determined until all the existing façade is removed, and the external envelope and junctions can be seen which will then enable detail drawings to be finalised. Weber joined Joyner Group with the project at tender stage, so they were able to put together a full project pack which included specification, pull out tests and detail drawings.

Once the existing façade had been removed, it was discovered that the substrate was not level and were differences of up to 40mm. It was also discovered that there were no EDPM’s around the windows.

Different thicknesses of insulation were used on the project to achieve a level substrate for rendering. Joyner Group also were instructed to install an Illbruck ME220 EDPM system to all windows, doors and curtain walling to prevent any potential water ingress.

A total of 900m2 of Weber non-combustible A1 fire rated insulated render system comprising of 90-130mm mineral fibre insulation, mesh reinforced base coat and silicone top coat finish was installed with a 10 year material and labour warranty.
